ArcheAge Chronicles stuttering? How to tell FPS drops from packet loss

ArcheAge Chronicles Early Access is only days old, and "the game keeps stuttering" is everywhere in chat. The catch is that a frame hitch and network lag look similar for a second and have nothing in common underneath. Figure out which one you have before you change a single setting.
One question settles most cases
When it hitches, does the whole picture freeze, or does the world keep moving while other players and mobs jump around? A full-screen freeze points at your PC: shaders compiling, a slow drive or a GPU at its limit. A smooth camera with characters snapping into new positions points at the network.
Take the official requirements seriously
The Steam page is specific. Minimum spec (Core i5-10400 or Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB RAM, RTX 2060 SUPER or RX 6600) targets 30 FPS at 1080p on Low with upscaling set to Quality. Recommended (Core i7-12700 or Ryzen 7 5700X, 32 GB, RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB or RX 7700 XT) targets 60 FPS on High. An SSD with 100 GB free is required. Playing from a hard drive or below minimum spec will stutter no matter how good your route is.
